After another year of remarkable growth for American cycling and a slew of international successes by U.S. athletes, all members are reminded that 2009 racing licenses go on sale Monday, Dec. 1. As you renew your membership, you’ll notice that the fee structure for 2009 is mostly unchanged and the price of an annual license is still the same as it was five years ago! However, a significant increase in insurance claims and premiums has forced a $1.00 increase in the insurance surcharge. Also, mountain bike members are reminded of the new category structure for 2009.

A pair of category-one and a pair of category-two UCI events marked the 28th-31st races on the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Calendar, Nov. 22-23. The Whitmore’s Landscape Super Cross Cup I on Saturday saw Ryan Trebon earn the men’s pro victory in the first of the pair of category-one races, while Todd Wells took the victory in Sunday’s Cross Cup II race. Georgia Gould earned wins in both of the elite women’s events held in South Hampton, N.Y. Jeremiah Bishop and Melanie Swartz won both pro events at the North Carolina Grand Prix. Three more category-two races will take place over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

With two of four USA Cycling Collegiate Cycling National Championships complete, both the Division I and II overall team standings are topped by a pair of ties. Fort Lewis College and Lees-McRae College are deadlocked atop the Division I standings with 37 total points, while the Colorado School of Mines and Colorado College lead the DII standings with 29 points apiece. The USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclo-cross National Championships will be held as a part of the overall USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships on Sunday, Dec. 14 at Tiffany Springs Park in Kansas City.
The second round of the 2008-09 UCI Track World Cup Classics concluded Down Under on Saturday with one American in action. Cari Higgins finished 13th in the women’s keirin to conclude the efforts of the four U.S. riders representing their respective track trade teams over the weekend. Americans leave Australia with no medals, Becky Quinn’s fourth-place finish in the points race being the best U.S. finish. The five-race series continues next month in South America as Cali, Colombia hosts round three Dec. 11-13.

The second round of the 2008-09 UCI Track World Cup Classics continued in Australia on Friday with Becky Quinn just missing a trip to the podium with a fourth-place-finish in the womenandrsquo;s 20-kilometer points race. Shelly Olds finished 13th, while Theresa Cliff-Ryan was unable to make the eveningandrsquo;s final round. The second round of the UCI Track World Cup Classics will continue November 22 in Melbourne with Cari Higgins expected to contest the Keirin.

Mountain biking is an exciting sport that can be enjoyed by anyone who knows how to ride a bike. Compared to the average bike ride, it does present some danger. Therefore, you should master these basic skills before you hit the trails or the dirt.
You can practice these beginning skills at a local park, school, bike path, or simply around your house. If you can, try to find a location with a steep hill.
Get a feel for your pedals
Practice moving your foot away from the pedal, first while sitting on your bike with one foot on the ground. Next, move on to releasing and replacing your foot while pedaling around for a bit. Those with toe clip and clipless type foot pedals will want to spend a bit more time practicing.

Beginner Mountain Bike Skills
The second round of the 2008-09 UCI Track World Cup Classics kicked off in Australia on Thursday as four Americans took to the track on the first of the three-day affair. Becky Quinn posted the top U.S. finish of the day with a sixth-place result in the womenandrsquo;s 10-kilometer scratch race. Shelly Olds earned the 11th spot and Theresa Cliff-Ryan was 20th. Cari Higgins contested the womenandrsquo;s sprint, but was unable to move out of the qualifying round.

The inaugural USA Cycling National Racing Calendar (NRC) Promoter Summit was conducted last weekend, Nov. 14-16, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs as 32 individuals representing 23 events on the 2009 NRC converged to share their thoughts regarding the nation’s premier Pro-Am road racing calendar. Created this year in order to improve communication and promote dialogue amongst individual race promoters and the national governing body, the NRC Promoter Summit was deemed a success, both by event organizers and participants alike.

The first-ever USA Cycling Mountain Bike Summit went off Nov. 14-16 in Colorado Springs with the simple goal of providing a forum for industry stakeholders to share ideas. The three-day conference offered a variety of industry members the opportunity to collectively meet and discuss direction and changes within the sport, share best practices and develop initiatives to advance mountain bike racing in the United States. The 45 attendees took part in several colloquiums involving USA Cycling staff and industry experts on Saturday before participating in round table discussions surrounding a variety of topics on Sunday.

Over the past two weeks in American cycling BMX cyclist Donny Robinson was named USOC Athlete of the Month, USA Cycling hosted a variety of summits designed to foster the overall growth of the sport in the U.S., the third UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup went off in the Netherlands with Katie Compton pulling in second place, the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Calendar rolled on as Americans prepare for the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships set for Dec. 11-14 in Kansas City.
