Geoff Kabush surged on the final lap to overtake Sho-air/Specialized’s Max Plaxton and secure the win in the Pro XCT’s inaugural event, the Fontana City National. Georgia Gould powered to victory over Luna teammate Catherine Pendrel using the course’s long, flat finish to take the just over 30 second win in the women’s Pro XCT race. Kabush and Gould now take the early lead in the seven event Pro XCT.
Twenty-four hours after winning the world title in the individual pursuit, Taylor Phinney added a second medal to the United States’ tally Friday, taking home a silver in the kilometer time trial at the 2009 UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Phinney clocked a time of 1 minute, 1.611 seconds to lower his own national record of 1:01.641 and place second behind Germany’s Stefan Nimke (1:00.666). Phinney has a shot at a third medal Sunday when he competes in the multi-race omnium event.
American cyclist Taylor Phinney lowered his own U.S. national record in the menandrsquo;s 4-kilometer individual pursuit Thursday morning in his qualifying heat at the 2009 UCI Track World Championships. Phinney clocked a new personal best time of 4 minutes 15.160 seconds to earn the number one seed in tonightandrsquo;s gold medal final. Phinneyandrsquo;s performance eclipsed his previous record of 4:15.223 andndash; a mark set last month during the final round of the 2008-09 UCI Track World Cup series in Copenhagen. A win tonight would make him the first American to win a men’s world title on the track since 1996.

After setting a new national record earlier today, Taylor Phinney became the first American in 13 years to win an elite menandrsquo;s world title on the track, capturing the rainbow jersey in the 4-kilometer individual pursuit Thursday night in Poland. Phinney clocked a winning time of 4:17.631 to beat Australiaandrsquo;s Jack Bobridge in the gold-medal final. Phinneyandrsquo;s victory also marks the continued resurgence of USA Cyclingandrsquo;s track program. Following a seven-year span in which Americans captured only two world championship medals between 1999 and 2005, U.S. athletes have since claimed a total of seven medals, including four world titles.
The USA Cycling National Development Team’s Cole House won the single day G.P. Waregem in Belgium on March 25. House persevered through 130 kilometers of harsh cold and rain to best the more than 220 rider field in the 1.12-rated event. With the victory House and his American teammates showed they are ready for the UCI Nations’ Cup opener on April 11 at the Tour of Flanders.

The nationandrsquo;s new professional cross country mountain bike series, the USA Cycling Pro Mountain Bike Cross Country Tour presented by Sho-Air (ProXCT) will kick-off on March 29 with the Fontana City National in Southridge, Calif. The Fontana National is the first of seven UCI sanctioned races making up the 2009 Pro XCT. The countryandrsquo;s premier professional cross country series, the Pro XCT is designed to offer top off road racers a consistent competitive stage and is the only one of its kind in America made up exclusively of events offering UCI points.

The United States Cycling Team captured four medals and took three of the top five spots in the pro cross country races at the annual Pan American Mountain Bike Continental Championships last weekend in Chile. In the pro menandrsquo;s downhill Chris Van Dine brought home a Pan Am title with a victory in the elite menandrsquo;s event while Rachel Bauer earned a bronze in the womenandrsquo;s event.
Despite a main that included all three 2008 U.S. Olympic team members, local-area resident Jason Rogers took home the elite men’s national title from the USA Cycling BMX National Championships Saturday in suburban Dallas. On the women’s side, Dominique Daniels continued her winning ways, earning both the elite and junior titles in dominating fashion. Corben Sharrah needed a photo finish to wrestle the junior men’s title away from defending champ Denzel Stein. Those were just some of the many titles awarded over the weekend to BMX racers from around the nation Saturday in Desoto.
USA Cyclingandrsquo;s 22nd Bill Woodul Race Mechanics Clinic took place later than normal this year due to the move of the national governing bodyandrsquo;s headquarters. Regardless, nearly 30 mechanics converged on the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on March 12-15, in hopes of becoming certified race mechanics. In addition to certification the clinic offers students a unique, one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn from industry instructors, receive hands-on experience and network with leaders in the cycling industry.

USA Cycling will award its first national titles of the year this weekend as the 2009 USA Cycling BMX National Championships take place Saturday at Metroplex BMX in suburban Dallas. All totaled USA Cycling will crown 52 national champions in elite and amateur categories. Headlining the list of participants are Olympic medalists Mike Day and Donny Robinson, as well as Olympian and defending champion Kyle Bennett. Saturday’s event is the highlight of a three-day weekend which also includes two UCI races - all hosted by the ABA.
