The second best thing you do after riding your basic bicycle home is to get it insured! OK! Prehaps you should take a picture of it and then then get it insured.
If you ride a basic bicycle, lets hope that you have no free hands to play with the gadgets or have your ears plugged with an mp3 player!
Accidents, are happening around us a lot. Even though we drive our vehicles as carefully as possible but it is always the other drivers that we have to worry about - right?
How can we cope with the potential of an accident? Being aware of everything around ue when we ride or drive and not getting distracted by cell phones, dvd players, gps systems etc. Of course its easy for me to say all of this, but you know that what I'm writing about is very often true.
Get rid of the distraction and concentrate more on riding or driving, and then you will be able to deal more speedily with the other driver's bad driving.

In 30 years of riding, I've never ever needed to take off my bike chain while on a trip. It's like needing to take off your handlebars. You just don't ever do that. What would be more useful is bringing some spare batteries for your bike light.

It depends, I'm ... By: HarvsPenzance. on 17 May 09, 22:28:45 It depends, I'm afraid. How worn is your chain? If it's old, then change your chain. If you have a new chain on an old cassette it's different. Sometimes the chain will 'wear in' to fit the cogs. If it doesn't then you'll need a new cassette.
Short answer, buy a new chain.
Important: Your new chain should be the same length as the old one. Don't go by the length of the old chain, it'll have stretched. Count the number of links in the old one and make sure the new one has the same number

That is EXACTLY why I do all my own bike maintenance. That dirtbag mechanic took the handlebar and hooked it on the person's top-tube. What if those bar-ends weren't smooth? He'd have scratched up the customer's top-tube.
Bike shop mechanics more often than not don't respect peoples' bikes. This video is a perfect example of this.
When I perform this task, I put a large towel between my bike frame and the handlebars, specifically to avoid cosmetic damage.

By: samurphy. on 16 Jun 10, 01:31:45 @dahgutone Walmart does indeed carry chain breaker tools that do just this, but they're of very cheap construction, being made of a powdered metal.. The walmart units are around $5 and come with a couple different quick link mechanisms for quick chain repair.
Alternately, if you don't have a quick link, its easy to just flip the tool around and push the pin back in on a standard link.

seems to me that if you break a link- it would only be one link-haven't seen more than a link or two go bad-shouldn't need more than a chain tool and a master link ??? and possibly putting the money in zip lock bags ???? just some ideas :>)
By: spitgalore. on 10 Sep 09, 13:37:17
The patches & money should not be loose on a windy day. The tool pouch should be larger to allow for individual containers for organizing. There's nothing more aggravating than the wind blowing your stuff around.
By: kingdrews. on 14 Aug 09, 20:57:29
its just in case you snap a link in your chain. some people use the same chain they have been riding on for the past 15 years, so its not uncommon for an old, rusted chain to snap.
By: JimSmithPirate. on 25 Jul 09, 08:34:11
No point in bringing the chain tool. It's a heavy chunk of metal that you'll never use on a ride. In 30 years of riding, I've never ever needed to take off my bike chain while on a trip. It's like needing to take off your handlebars. You just don't ever do that. What would be more useful is bringing some spare batteries for your bike light.

Best to carry your spare inner tube inside a solid plastic container. Otherwise it will have been damaged/holed by the rest of the luggage in your backpack by the time you come to use it. I didn't see what the point of carrying a chain remover is, though? If you haven't got a replacement chain with you when you're out and about, why would you be removing the existing one?
By: ojanm. on 18 Aug 07, 20:43:24
I think there would be demand for showing how to use the chain tool. :-)

By: AussieLonginthetooth. on 01 Dec 06, 01:31:55
I read recently on the web that current thinking is that tyre casings and inner tubes shouldn't be talced? Just a minute amount added to a patch to stop it attaching to the casing.
By: DigitalCyclist. on 30 Nov 06, 13:25:32
Simple addition 2: If you're going to carry a chain tool, toss in a short section of compatible chain as well (3 to 5 links), a couple of compatible chain pins, and/or a removable link. Awesome, to-the-point, easy-to-learn-from videos!
By: DigitalCyclist. on 30 Nov 06, 13:22:27
Simple addition 1: put the inner tube in a plastic baggie with a little talcum powder. It'll make installation much easier. Great video!
