The second best thing you do after riding your basic bicycle home is to get it insured! OK! Prehaps you should take a picture of it and then then get it insured.
If you ride a basic bicycle, lets hope that you have no free hands to play with the gadgets or have your ears plugged with an mp3 player!
Accidents, are happening around us a lot. Even though we drive our vehicles as carefully as possible but it is always the other drivers that we have to worry about - right?
How can we cope with the potential of an accident? Being aware of everything around ue when we ride or drive and not getting distracted by cell phones, dvd players, gps systems etc. Of course its easy for me to say all of this, but you know that what I'm writing about is very often true.
Get rid of the distraction and concentrate more on riding or driving, and then you will be able to deal more speedily with the other driver's bad driving.

By: arielco. on 18 May 10, 15:34:52 @cobalt120: The balls engage the rings at different "latitudes" on each side depending on their position/inclination; at one extreme one ring will contact close to the "pole" and the other close to the "equator", thus showing different radii to both rings; thus, the ratio would be something like R(left half) / R(right half). The total variation between the highest and lower "gear" would be (Rmax/Rmin)^2, which depends. on how much you can tilt the balls.

It's a unique ... By: cobalt120. on 12 Apr 10, 22:34:26 It's a unique design. I would not go as far as saying that it has ratios as in a 12 speed mountain bike sense. Since the balls or spheres are all the same size, the ratios are determended by the amount of viscosity contact pressure between the hubs via the spheres. Low gear would have the spheres further away from the output hub, therefore the fluid would slip more easily through the micro-gap.

Not a novelty, for ... By: KrunchyJD. on 17 Mar 10, 13:10:14 Not a novelty, for bikes, but the problem is weight. See to ride a bike at maximum efficiency you should ideally pedal at a set speed and decrease or increase your moving speed by changing gear. EG spin your pedals at 1.5 times per second and change gear to change bike speed. This is the most efficient way to ride a bike and racing cyclists would love it. The downside is that if the thing weighs 4 kg it is too heavy for a bicycle.

If you think back to the coffeeshop/party/tvshow where you heard someone say that, you'll see that that situation was QUITE different from this one.

By: asdicarlo. on 14 Jan 10, 03:38:01 there are countless messages in this early film that could not be portrayed so eloquently today; startling how it holds up so phenomenally, undoubtedly eliciting collective nods in regards to what has happened socially and economically since those times. it is fortunate that art this good can be captured through such a raw lens.

By: Xalira06. on 25 Mar 09, 10:52:45 I know, Neo-realism can tear your heart apart because of the sadness of the stories :( If you want try to see "Roma cittā aperta" (Rome, open city), maybe you'll appreciate it better. Just avoid Sciusciā (Shoeshine) or Germania anno zero (Germany year zero); those are REAL tragedies without any light of hope :/

I see no elderly, arthritic, or injured people in this video. @ ... By: SIMKINETICS. on 28 Jul 10, 19:27:46 @willubemyfriend4ever Energy consumed in the automatic function is negligible because it is not directly involved in the main conversion of the speed/torque ratio of power in the SIVAT. Furthermore, the rubber band, which represents a spring, is an energy storage device; so, small amounts of energy are stored and released in its own operation with high efficiency. Goals of the SIVAT concept are to be efficient, and to improve systemic efficiency of motor or engine power conversion.

@PicoDeFreako Yes. ... By: SIMKINETICS. on 26 Jul 10, 22:06:45 @PicoDeFreako Yes. Older comments explain this. High gear limit will be above 5:1 by virtue of different sprocket sizing in the next prototype, called Gen2. Note that, in the video, chain divergence toward the chainwheel (at front) is from a 55T/11T drive; not quite enough for optimal operation because the SIVAT itself operates best below ~2:3. Gen2 fixes this shortcoming of the unit in the video. Gen2 will be have a different chain-drive system to achieve that without a huge chainwheel.

@leparditas I can't ... By: SIMKINETICS. on 24 Jul 10, 12:45:54 @leparditas I can't understand how it works either. I just got lucky! Since the patent is pending, it's unwise to show drawings. I can say that it's a type of differential. It's also so wierd that I had forgotten how it works from time to time; it can be confusing, by its deceptive simplicity. The math required many hours of focused attention, especially difficult for a dyslexic like me.

@SIMKINETICS Well, ... By: aboodankaboot. on 23 Jul 10, 13:05:52 @SIMKINETICS Well, I gave it a long thought before I commented. I found myself typing out the comment and editing it three times each time deleting the whole comment and starting over. Anyway, I thought of that because I once had my bicycle fall on the gears-mounted side. The gear-changing mechanism malfunctioned after that minor accident. So I was thinking of a strategic mounting location and that's what came in mind. Kudos to you for this exciting invention. I wish you the best of luck!
@aboodankaboot You ... By: SIMKINETICS. on 23 Jul 10, 12:14:44 @aboodankaboot You are correct! How did you 'channel' my thoughts? The SIVAT will be located strategically on the F.S. MTB for various reasons, resistance to damage being an important goal. I want riders to enjoy their experience under all conditions, including mishaps! Personal experience in biking has left me this message: design for the exception that makes the rule!
@SIMKINETICS Thanks ... By: aboodankaboot. on 23 Jul 10, 08:40:48 @SIMKINETICS Thanks for replying. From the video, I imagine that the IVT unit will be mounted between the right and left pedals, just beneath the seat, am I right? I'm asking this because I'm wondering will the IVT be malfunction-free in case the bicycle falls from either side left or right, back-flips/front-flips and hits the ground, etc? I understand that it may be early to answer such a question but nevertheless, any thoughts?
@aboodankaboot ... By: SIMKINETICS. on 22 Jul 10, 21:38:18 @aboodankaboot Thanx! Patent is pending. Planned first application is a full-suspension MTB. Maintenance should be similar to internally-geared, sealed bike hubs. Mud & dirt won't hurt!

Also, does the IVT require maintainance? Thanks
@zohaib029 There's ... By: SIMKINETICS. on 21 Jul 10, 22:07:35 @zohaib029 There's more. High gears are for downhill because you do not want to pedal too fast as your bike gains speed going down the hill. In high gear, your pedaling force normally remains high until your pedaling speed increases. You will want to always have moderate force & speed in your pedaling for best efficiency, regardless of the grade of the hill, up or down. Ride your derailleur bike around, & observe this relationship between pedaling force & speed, while changing gears.

This is an accident (tough it still should be red or yellow at least) but the other one was deliberate attack with possible fatal consequences (direct strike to the chest could break the ribs and impale the lungs or heart) = red card & De Jong banned for life from the World Cup.

If you have a new chain on an old cassette it's different. Sometimes the chain will 'wear in' to fit the cogs. If it doesn't then you'll need a new cassette.
Short answer, buy a new chain.
Important: Your new chain should be the same length as the old one. Don't go by the length of the old chain, it'll have stretched. Count the number of links in the old one and make sure the new one has the same number

Sure, some of that could be roughed in with a hacksaw. It's just a matter of whether you prefer chocolate or strawberry.
By: condogg42. on 14 Mar 10, 09:32:44

who is playing the music for this video? it rocks...
By: TomOswald. on 03 Jan 09, 17:48:39
Those particular lugs are investment cast. The angles can be changed by a degree or so if needed.
By: TomOswald. on 03 Jan 09, 17:45:44
It depends on how much coffee I've had. Actually, I've never bothered to count. Blades are pennies apiece. The time is takes to change them is more valuable.
By: breadloaf. on 03 Jan 09, 05:42:50
wow this takes handmade to a completely different level. Nice work Mr. Oswald. How many saw blades do you go through per lug?

By: thesku11s. on 27 Jun 08, 09:17:07
Wanna Say thanks for putting this up, its a great insight into the mysterious world f frame building. I look foward to seeing how lugs are joined together.
By: ElDuke717. on 11 May 08, 02:53:03

By: tecnomundos. on 19 Apr 08, 04:05:25
amazing piece of art. This guy seems to know what he`s doing. I hope this art never desapear. I`d love to have a real hand made frame like this. It`s the first time I watch how they use to made this part of the frame.

Tom is a true craftsman. I've been riding one of his bikes for a few years now and LOVE it. Nice to see how it was actually made. See my bike frame on Tom's site. It's the last one on page 3 of the picture gallery. Thanks Tom. Mitch Guthrie

I don't know exactly what to tell you. I'm a very practical guy. What looks good to me is what's built well and lasts long, but I still have a lot of respect for the art work you do considering it's done by hand. And I actually hope you have taught or are teaching other people your art. Craftsmen are a dying breed that I don't wish to see disappear.
